FAQ

1. Why are you running a leadership consultation on this topic?

As YWAM’s recent conversations around Foundational Value #15 demonstrate, the topic of sexuality is one of the most difficult conversations to have in the church, including in our mission. Like most of the church, YWAM has not always engaged these dynamics well, unintentionally harming LGBTQ+ people among our staff, students, and those we minister to around the world.

That’s why we are seeking to present a different way of engaging in the conversation. We are not promoting a position contrary to our values, but rather offering strategic perspectives on how we might engage this topic: Biblically, Missiologically, and Relationally, with each of our speaker line-up designed to that end.

2. Will the consultation be presenting the traditional view of sexuality?

Given that most YWAM leaders are already familiar with and in support of the traditional view, the consultation is not about presenting any one view. Instead, it’s designed to invite us to explore this topic from creative perspectives in the hope that we will be able to minister more effectively and compassionately around these topics. In keeping with Foundational Value #18, we recognize that central to communicating with integrity is to listen.

3. What can we do to be prepared for the consultation?

While there is no required preparation needed for the consultation, the following resources might be helpful for you and your ministries:

-“LGBT & the Church with Dr. Preston Sprinkle”. Dr. Sprinkle recently spent time with YWAM’s Founder’s Circle. This material has been recommended as a result: https://www.digitalleadersforum.org/

NOTE: YWAM staff can receive a discount on Dr. Sprinkles course (limited time).

-“Sexuality, Scripture, & the Soul of Christianity” with Preston Sprinkle & Justin Lee.

4. Who should come to this consultation?

We are inviting any and all YWAM staff who have an interest in exploring this topic respectfully. We are especially hoping to see ministry/base leaders, school leaders, and regional elders attend. However, all YWAM staff are welcome to attend.
